The Following Story is from Associated Content and brought to you by financial advisor

Most financial advisors have put a lot of focus on slimming down one's expenses in the last few years. This is especially true with small purchases such as the morning coffee, or confectionary from the donut shop on the way to work. By following this advice, many people are taking away things from themselves which are causes of joy and happiness. If an individual feels as if he or she is deprived, they are much more likely to splurge and break the budget. When this happens, the goal of cutting back expenses really becomes moot. Instead we need to change how we think about budgeting.

Most of us seem to make our purchases without ever even thinking about it. Our mind tells us that we want something, whether it is a quick trip to McDonalds, or that new television set, so we go out and get it. The reason we should be writing budgets is because it moves our purchasing decisions from an emotionally based unconscious to a conscious and concise plan. When you make a conscious choice as to how you spend your money, you will be able to focus on what brings you peace and joy in your life. This way you will not feel deprived because you are on a budget and thus will not splurge.

When most of us write a budget (if we do), we do them in the wrong order. Most of us put the big hairy fixed expenses at the beginning, and then do what we can with the rest. Usually this takes up 75% of your income, leaving not much room for everything else. Instead we should start by doing what brings us joy and excitement first. This will then help you realize what your priorities are and might cause you to consider cutting back a bit in your home or transportation so that you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee. It certainly won't change overnight, but over a long period of time you will be able to focus on the most important things in life to you.

This is not to say that you should only buy things which cause immediate happiness. You have to think about what will make you happy in the future too. Chances are being able to eat during retirement would make you happy, so you should save for retirement. In the end it's a good balance, but that does not mean you should just take away everything that you enjoy because it makes your budget just a little bit better.
